Cordia’s Review: S2, E16 – Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered

Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered
Season 2, Episode 16
Original airing: 2/10/1998

My Rating: 72

The Good: This is a really fun episode that explores a relationship that has been pretty baffling – Cordelia and Xander. The episode opens with Buffy mocking Xander for dating Cordelia, which has been the vibe throughout their relationship. Everyone thinks Xander is nuts. But it doesn’t matter because he feels something real for Cordelia. And during this episode, she reveals that she feels the same way. But peer pressure is alive and well at Sunnydale High, causing Cordelia to break up with Xander when she doesn’t really want to do so. This sets up the end of the episode where Cordelia gets to prove she’s actually human after all and stand up to her supposed friends. All in all, a lot of fun.

The episode also explores all of Xander’s potential female relationships, including Buffy, Willow and Jenny. It’s nice to see his character shine through when he refuses to take advantage of any of these women.

The Bad: Unfortunately, Angelus is again relegated to the background. A threat is setup with the roses he sends to Buffy, but just as he’s about to hurt Xander, Drusilla steps in thanks to the spell and stops him. Then Angelus quite literally fades into the background.

Favorite Moment: Cordelia has always come across as very shallow and vapid. It’s nice to see her show some real personality in this episode when she finally yells at her friend Harmony and then walks off with Xander. I especially love her little freak out as they’re leaving and Xander’s manner of calming her down.

The Bottom Line: This is a very fun episode which actually moves the characters of Xander and Cordelia forward quite a bit.

  1. Hello! I own the entire set of the Buffy series and have seen all seasons about 7 times. And although I am the type of person that can watch or read something a million times and enjoy it like the first time, thanks to your podcast, I am seeing the series in a totally new, critical way yet still enjoying them! So thanks for that!

I love this episode! Like you Cordia, I love it when Oz n Willow are on screen together. Although this episode they weren’t together, but they did do that cute googly-eye back and forth in the opening of the episode and it just warms my heart.

My heart just sank when Buffy opens the box of flowers from Angel. Sara Michelle is just brilliant in showing so many emotions at once. Shock, and real terror.

Angel was just a total disappointment as he slowly and awkwardly backs away towards the tree – it looked ridiculous. But I love how I actually said “ewwww” when Dru kissed Zander! I absolutely adore her character.

And how much do I hate Harmony! She is the biggest you-know-what. I can’t stand to see her on screen.

Anyways, I LOVE your podcast and love Robin’s accent (I’m totally crushing on him! hee). Keep up the spectacular work and I cannot wait for you to get to season 6!!!!!!! I know, it’s a ways, but something to look forward to. : )
